Business in Costa Rica
Business in Costa Rica is one of the safest and the most lucrative
of prospects as there is a good scope for the foreign investments in
Latin America. The Costa Rican government its financial
establishments and all its ministries carefully maintain a
continental and a pro- US stance in relation to the various tax laws
and the financial security policies.
The main aim is to attract and
entice the high end corporations to take advantage of the people of
Costa Rica who are the most well educated disciplined and computer
literate. There is also the added advantage of the production
infrastructure that has been lately modernized by the government.
Moreover the economy has also transformed from its total dependence
upon cattle, bananas and coffee to the one that is centering upon
the high- tech services in the sphere of telecommunications and
micro processor production.
The business climate of Costa Rica is investment friendly and the
Government is intent upon making it the Silicon Valley of Latin
America. In order to achieve this, the Government has been able to
pull in companies like the Continental Airways, Intel Corporation,
GE, Microsoft, Acer, and Abbot Laboratories.
These companies have
made huge investments with the help of the distribution facilities
and also the major production amenities available. Costa Rica
business has thrived so well that it is now capable to earn greater
revenue from exporting high technology rather than the usual coffee
and banana. Now this industry earns even more than the very
lucrative tourism industry as well.
There are a number of reasons that has led to the business in Costa
Rica to thrive to this great extent. The World Bank has given Costa
Rica a bill that is an excellent incentive for the overall economic
and political growth. At the annual conference held in El Salvador,
the World Bank lauded Costa Rica as it had one of the most robust
and stable growth among all the democracies of Latin America. The
economic growth has been commendable indeed and this has been one of
the best social development indicators in the whole of the country.
Costa Rica has always been very vocal in trying to bring about the
concept of Free Trade and the agreement has already been signed by
Mexico and a few other countries in the region. There are
innumerable free trade zones and the tax holiday opportunities are
very attractive.
There are also other benefits like exemptions from
the import duties levied on capital goods, parts and components, and
raw materials. There are also exemptions on profits for eight years,
and a fifty percent exemption in the next four years and open profit
repatriation.
COMEX that is the Ministry of Foreign Trade had conducted a study
that showed that the export earnings will amount to $15.7 billion
that is about four times the present amount. Intel has been the
leader with $3.5 billion in 2001. These high -tech companies will
rise along with this export boom but the traditional exports of
bananas and coffee will decrease in the overall figures but the
revenues will continue to grow as before even in these sectors.
